SUMMER READING

Book Lists for Incoming 6th, 7th & 8th Graders

May 23, 2008

This summer, all students are encouraged to make the effort to read as much as possible. Turn off the television, and enter the world of a good book. Books are portable, so you can read anywhere: on the beach, in the car, safely tucked into the corner of a window seat as the soft summer rain pours down outside, in a sleeping bag under the stars in the backyard. When books and reading are a part of your vacation, you will be in for a magical summer experience!

The goal of summer reading is to keep our students minds sharp. Each student needs a self-discipline of regular reading.  No other single skill so dramatically impacts school achievement. Our second goal for summer reading is for students to discover the pleasure of reading.  We would like to encourage students to read consistently anything that is interesting to them.

In an effort to keep moving towards these goals, we are asking students to read one of the books off the appropriate list below. Students will be invited to join in on class discussions of the four main elements of the book (character, theme, setting, and plot) when they return to school.  The summer reading book that your student selects to read will be used in their first book project.  English teachers will be explaining the assignment in greater detail in class in the fall.
